Predjam Castle is an exceptional medieval fortress located near Postojna in Slovenia. This impressive castle is carved into a rock wall and rises above the surrounding area, creating a spectacular view.
The castle is known for its exceptional location, as it is built at the entrance to a large cave called Predjamska jama. The castle and the cave are closely connected and together represent a unique tourist attraction.
The castle has a long history dating back to the 12th century. The first written sources about the castle date back to 1274, but it was probably built earlier. The castle is most famous for the story of Erasmus Predjamski, who was the Slovenian Robin Hood of his time. Erazem was a knight who resisted the Habsburg monarchy and carried out frequent raids from the castle on nearby merchants. The castle was remodeled and expanded several times in different periods. It has several floors, towers, courtyards and defensive walls that were built to protect against enemies. The interior of the castle is richly furnished with architectural elements from different periods, including medieval furniture, paintings, fireplaces and decorations.
Today, Predjam Castle is open to the public and offers guided tours, where visitors can discover the history of the castle, visit the various rooms and walk through the terraces, which offer stunning views of the surroundings.
